Year's End

I think this year is a really memorable one for so many reasons - both good and bad. Sigh. I was just talking about the year with Jon and as always, year's end is a time of reflection upon the year that has passed. I dunno, personally, I feel as though this year was sort of emotional one. So many things happening, so many twists and turns... Anyhow...

Year's end should be another time to be thankful for the things that have happened. Thanks to the person who helped me relax last night. Thanks to the people who are great friends. Thanks to the people who are just there.

This year, I've lost a few people who I love dearly and reconnected with old friends. Bittersweet. This year, I've had to deal with a lot of things thrown in my way. Good and bad. This year is so terribly emo. I think the bulk of this year's memories come from the losses. Do I remember turning 18? Hell, that's not as easy to remember as the losses. But as I said, thankfulness. I guess it'd be better to do shout outs.

Shout Outs:
CB: Dude, thanks for being the best buddy ever.
Fano: Your views, opinions are gems. Thanks for your input.
Bro: Totally miss you man. It seems so long now.... But thank you for everything.
Nan: Nan, we really miss you. Nothing is the same without you but thanks for being who you are through the 18 years I've known you.
Jon: It was great to reconnect with you the past month. Thanks for being the constant friend and thanks for the intro to biking.
Mesh, Cawo, Reg & Xin Le: Through the ups and downs, you guys have been the best buds. Thanks for making life with you-know-who more bearable.
DMC2A/B05: I really have to thank y'all for being the class with the least violent politics and being easy to get through and work with. I mean it. Thanks to every single one of you.
Smack: I've talked to you here and there and its been good. Thanks for your support what ever way it was.
Mom & dad: Thanks for putting up with all my nonsense.
Frederick: Dude, yer growing up. Thanks for everything!
L: Cuz, thanks for hearing me out on my rants.
Kay Jen: Okay, I know you don't like being called KJ. Thanks for those zany chats to while the time away. Cocktail parties eh?

I think that's it. If I've missed anyone out, I'm sorry but thank you too.

Busy again?

Mehh, I hate the number of assignments we have to do this holiday season. Who the HECK is in the mood for assignments? Definitely not me. Right now I'm listening to Phil Collins' Come With Me in a bid to relax. Blah. I hate, hate, hate assignments during this time. So hard to co-ordinate stuff.

I wonder how the others handle studies and work at the same time. I have a feeling I'd be overwhelmed doing both at once. How I wish things were simpler. So, slap me on the face cause reality is harsh. I hate being so square and being the one to always be the first to bring up the subject "project" for discussion. I feel as though I talk a lot and under-perform which is probably true. I hate being so rigid and blah. I think this is getting way negative... Back to work I suppose. I'm confident they'll pull it off somehow, they will pull it off somehow.

Aunty Jeanette & Uncle Freddie - A pirate themed T-shirt
Aunty Audrey & Uncle Marcel - RM50!
Mom & Dad - A bicycle
Shwee - Some photo frames that look like a puzzle

Merry Christmas

A belated Merry Christmas to all. Above is a picture of Aunty Ivy with Uncle Pancho's grandkids, Divya and Sonya. The last time I saw them, Sonya was quiet and shy. Now though, she's confident and talks much more. Way to go Sonya! The kids have stayed with tata(sp?, grandpa) and pati (grandma) since their mother's death. And they get "mad" when he smokes. Cute kids, heh. Anyway, hope everyone had a really great Christmas.

Christmas this year was different in the least. After Nana went, nothing in KL is the same really. The moment we arrived, we used to go to her room and say hi and hug her. Now we go to her room to put our bags down. Christmas used to be held at her place and everyone would come and have dinner then open the presents. This year we went to Uncle Freddie's and opened the presents before dinner cause he had asked other friends over to eat as well. It was weird in the least - our family like to keep Christmas to ourselves and doesn't mix well with others so you can imagine what happened later on. Uncle Freddie had to entertain while we played with the kids and then the adults went back pretty soon.

That left Elaine, David, Frederick and I back in Uncle Freddie's where we played with the kids and put them to bed. I must say that from the last time I went up and stayed with them (May 2005), the kids have grown for the better. Ryan is more polite, Ethan talks more. Brandon and Ashley though, I've nothing to say except that Ashely is more willing to go to people and not so attached to Anee (sp?). Christmas this year was different and I'm glad that we didn't celebrate it back at Nan's house.

Here's the low down of the past week:
Saturday - Drive to KL took 8 hours because of heavy traffic and bad road conditions
Sunday - Shopping, shopping, shopping the whole day & dinner with Uncle Pancho, Aunty Raji, Divya & Sonya and Aunty Ivy, Uncle Berty
Monday - Church at SIB KL (I like that church), lunch at home, dinner at Uncle Freddie's
Tuesday - Return home

Pretty packed weekend. Oh, before I forget, a few shout outs. Happy Christmas Fano, Llano, Mko (I think I know the 3 of you check in from time to time). Also happy Christmas to the Cafe gang, Miriam, Jon, Gabe, Sister Esther and Wai Wai's section 2006.

Well, now that the merriness is over, its time to get back to work. Projects and unfinished assignments and I still have my game making! Blah. The wonders of tertiary education eh?

Assignments and projects:
SCR - The Departed assignment
CGD - Developing the game
PRMP - Project
EOF - Project
MPP - Project preparation & media journals

Not forgetting that I'm down on 5th Jan for the open house. Wowzers, busy like mad. Aight, be back sometime soon. Have a good week all!

Apprentii

If you have watched both types of The Apprentice (The Apprentice Donald Trump & The Apprentice Martha Stewart), you'd find them to be two really different shows. The editing is key. Let me show you.

The Apprentice: Donald Trump intro video (season 5):

The Apprentice: Martha Stewart intro video:

Try thinking what the Donald version would be like if you played it with the Martha music. Oh goodness, hers doesn't even sound like its a show about finding an apprentice at all! Its, like the opening of an Oprah show featuring Martha Stewart. Donald's is better in this case I'd say.

Boardrooms are also pretty different. Martha calls hers a conference room.

The Apprentice: Donald Trump boardroom:

The Apprentice: Martha Stewart conference room:

As you can see, one is dark and one is bright. Martha's version seems kinda like an easy thing to breeze through compared to Donald's. I liked her line "You're just not working for me" though. She could have been more mean and then maybe her show would've had the punch it needed to get signed on for another season. Donald however, comes across as unduly forceful and domineering. He isn't on the floor where the action is so how does he know if a person really did screw up? Mehh, just go look at the episode in season 3 where Angie was fired.

And now, about how busy I have been....

Wednesday:
Classmates (Ifah, Carol, Kamesh, Arisya, Nad, Weijie, Zhili, Gajan) and Sharmil and Farid came over and we had fun playing pictionary and heart attack and eating and watching MTV (the guy with man boobs who had to run is something hard to forget). Then went out to get a gift for Friday's gift exchange. While waiting for Halimah a.k.a. Santa's Helper, Nad spotted Mr. Hady "Singapore Idol" Mirza. So she and Arisya and Farid and Zhili went to take a picture with him while I stood on the side taking the pictures for them. I shook hands with Mr. Idol and he then walked off and blended with the hoards of people there.

Thursday:
Met Miriam, Yessie, Shwee and Esther and had another fun day. Pictionary and heart attack again and then some videos that had us laughing. Go watch the "New Llama Song". Llama llama duck. Heh (Miriam, it's still in my head!!!! Sorta like how Black Sunday's tone is still in my head). Then off to church and on the 30th we're having Jalan Kayu Roti Prata. At night, went out with Jon for supper. Awesome bike riding once again.

Friday:
BBQ with Wai Wai and Sister Esther's section. Loads of pictures, gift exchange and some quite well done food (thank you Gracia, Ying Min, Yuen Ying, Andre and whoever else who cooked). Yep, that's about it the past few days. Blah.

Crocs and Issues & The Rain

My mom says that the Crocs brand of shoes look good on kids. They're meant for kids? Well, the lastest fashion trend I suppose. Adults like them too but I don't like the way Crocs look. Anyway, not so recently there have been a spat of publicised incidents involving children and Crocs which leads to the question "Are Crocs safe to wear?" Yes, says the company. But would you expect them to say otherwise anyway? Fine, so if Crocs cater to kids and kids don't know escalator safety, why are Crocs still being manufactured? Or rather, why do parents let kids wear them?

I think its kind of ironic that Crocs are made for kids and the company tells the public its the user who should use it safely when they are targeting kids who, by nature, do NOT act safely. I remember when my brother and I were little and we were playing when he got hurt badly. Kids DO those kinds of things. Fine, maybe they are saying that parents should be the ones. Mehh, only the problem was realised after a 2-year old girl lost her big toe eh?

It's been raining the whole day today. While most people hate it, I actually like it. It's really cool now and feels like winter. Ahh, probably my imagination of what winter is like but not really is. But still, you don't really need any forms of cooling today, not the fan, not the air conditioner. Just the plain breeze. I still do turn on the fan and open the windows and then I get chided by my mom who says she's not a cold blooded person like me and then switches off the fan. Tonight will be a cosy night!

Giant Wheels

A lot of countries seem to be racing to get an observation wheel of their own. London has the London Eye, Malaysia is going to have the Eye on Malaysia and Singapore the Singapore Flyer. What is it with these giant wheels?! Ah well, I dunno. To me, it seems as though each country is just trying to out do each other. Isn't everyone always anyway? Tallest this, longest that, biggest. Just so that it gets into the Guiness World Book of Records eh? No other claim to fame I suppose...

Anyway, I'm so much closer to watching Survivor: Cook Islands' finale and reunion episode. Like, 7 minutes away! But I'm gonna go out to do some window shopping and get some stuff for tomorrow. So I'll leave the laptop to rest till I get back and then watch the been-waiting-whole-season moment. Later.

Wrong reporting sucks

Sunday Finale: Yul Kwon Wins 'Survivor'

Sun Dec 17,11:35 PM ET

His former competitors awarded Yul Kwon, the "godfather" of the CBS game "Survivor: Cook Islands," with the $1 million top prize Sunday in a classic finale that pitted brains vs. brawn.

Kwon, a management consultant who was the soft-spoken strategic whiz in the 13th edition of the game, bested Oscar "Ozzy" Lusth, the effortless athlete who dominated physical challenges as the game neared its end.

With the money on the line, it was a 5-4 vote.

"It's the first time I've ever felt bad that somebody didn't win," host Jeff Probst said. "It was so evenly matched."

Kwon, a 31-year-old management consultant who lives in San Mateo, Calif., was the brain with degrees from Stanford University and Yale Law School. He controlled the strategic aspect of the game, particularly after he found a hidden piece of jewelry that guaranteed him one-time immunity from being voted off the island.

"The key to winning the game is maximizing the good luck and minimizing the bad luck," he said later.

Lusth, who has two years of Santa Barbara City College on his resume and works as a waiter near the surf in Venice, Calif., mastered the tropical game's challenges. He won two very different ones on the show's final two-hour telecast Sunday: winning a race to complete a complex puzzle, and showing his endurance by standing on a tiny platform for two and a half hours.

For the first time, "Survivor" brought a third contestant into the final vote, but 28-year-old Rebekah "Becky" Lee was a non-factor.

For a game that began in racial controversy, it turned into a showcase for the nation's diversity, according to Kwon.

"Survivor" producers were criticized for segregating four, four-person teams along ethnic lines at the game's start: white, black, Hispanic and Asian American.

The game's final four contestants included a black woman, Mexican-born man and two Asian-Americans. The fourth was Sundra Oakley, a 31-year-old actress from Los Angeles.

Those four people made up the game's Aitu tribe, which at one point competed against the eight-member Raro tribe. Methodically, that core group of four voted all eight of the others out of the game, the final one Sunday being Adam Gentry, 28, a copying machine salesman who lives in San Diego.

Lee hoped to garner votes by convincing her former tribe members that she had mastered the social aspect of the game, in order to survive so long.

They weren't buying it, particularly after Lee and Oakley had to compete in a tie-breaking contest that required them to build and sustain a fire. After an hour failing with a flint, Probst gave them matches. Lee won because Oakley ran out of matches.

"After 35 days out here, you should both know how to make fire," Probst scolded.

Sheesh. And this IS the Associated Press. Of all people to get facts wrong, man. I would've thought better of them.

Errors in reporting:
1) Use of colour to describe people that may seem as slightly racist
- Maybe I'm being a prick, but do not refer to one as black or white for that matter, its insulting

2) Get your facts right
- Ms. Claire always taught us to get the facts right cause they are facts
- He said "After 38 days out here...", not 35 days!

19 Castaways, 39 Days, 1 Survivor!

Survivor: Fiji premieres February next year. Stay tuned, it looks exciting. The logo is awesome too. Nice eh?

Survivor: Fiji will feature 19 castaways in two tribes. In addition, exile island will now have 2 hidden immunity idols to up the stakes. On top of that, one tribe will have a luxurious time while the other has next to nothing. Hmmm, this preview was powerful. I suppose its cause its a season filmed in the fall so they have already wrapped up filming for the season and thus have more footage to work with for the promo video which really packs a punch.

Survivor: Cook Islands was good. I won't spoil the winner, but it was a good season with a good cast. The twists introduced were also interesting and the game play was good. So, congrats to the winner of Survivor: Cook Islands!

Trinity@PL & Citizen Journalism

I'll be moving to Paya Lebar from the current Adam premises. That is, next year. Its kinda exciting. Seriously. Haha. Only phase 1 will be ready next year, that being 2 blocks of the 4 block complex. Its big though, I've heard. Ignyte will start out there small first, with just LT2 at 300-seats. But we'll see how we go from there. I think from the start it'd be pretty packed. Aww, man, its just kinda cool thinking about PL. Sure, I'll miss Adam, and have good memories of the place. But well, PL it is and PL we look forward to. Ownership. That's what P.Da wanted and I think the youth's ownership of Ignyte and PL will be strong for sure. Hey, if I feel excited myself, think of the others eh? Haha. With a bunch of us excitables, there's gotta be some synergy for sure.

Anyway, I decided to think through citizen journalism. I dunno which magazine it is, but the year 2006's person award (or something similar) goes to YOU. You being the person reading. There's been much debate about whether news companies will be able to retain their jobs and whether newspapers will eventually be phased out. Citizen journalism will become popular forecast some analysts. But then again, those analysts did forecast the demise of radio when TV entered the market.

No, I am a firm believer in newspapers and that they will not dissappear. No. There are many reasons why the papers will never diminish. Sure, readership is falling, but they will remain profitable enough to remain in business, maybe by way of merger or acquisition they will stay alive, but some how they will. Think about it. Will you really have the time to log online, view blogs, vid-casts, pod-casts and all. As it is, life as a student is pretty busy, what more as an executive, manager, director in the working world?

Saying that one will be able to spend time to surf and view information when one is working is kinda weird. Why? Cause you'll be inundated by work for one, secondly, the papers have it convenient for you. You might need to go all over the net to get some information, but for papers, you have it all in one stack of printed paper on which you have your information. For busy executives, this is what works for them since its quick and easy to read. As one matures, I'm sure they're not going to have time to read different blogs to find out the going-ons of another country. As it is, life is fast paced as it is, it will only get faster as the years go by.

Another argument would be that the information will not be that up to date. Say some one in Iraq decides to report on the web about the ongoing war there, they would have to have access to the internet to publish their "article". In a place where a war is going on, its highly unlikely that they'd be able to publish the "news" till a day or two later. News companies provide their journalists with the necessary equipment to be able to update the news centre instantaneously through satelite phones and other such gadgets. Then also comes the question of credibility. How credible is a citizen journalist? News companies develop their credibility after years of being on the market. How does one expect some citizen of the world to develop this credibility?

It can, however, be said that citizen journalism will be popular amongst the youth since they can create their own content and are poor scrutinisers. This segment of the population also hasn't had enough experience to make them more judgemental and unwilling to believe as the older members of society. They are more open to new stimuli and hence, citizen journalism may be more popular in this demographic group. In addition, they have more time to themselves than working adults and are more tech savvy, hence more likely to search for such information.

As it is, news companies have lost the readership from a large segment of youths. This can be attributed to them getting their information from other sources. Yet, I still stand by my preposition that citizen journalism will not replace newspapers or news companies in the near furture.

Biking Fun

Going on a bike several times has got me seriously addicted to the fun of riding one. Should I get a bike licence instead? =P Heh. But seriously, I like riding one now that Jon has his licence and his own bike and, I trust, some experience. Heh. But really, I cannot stop gushing about the experience of riding a bike. Exhilirating for sure. Definitely a must try. Yeah, sports bikes are cool. But I suppose they're expensive as well eh? Makes me wonder what kind of bike Aung has.

Yeah, last night was pretty cool going to West Coast Park and hanging out till late night. I should do that more often these holidays. Its, I dunno, kinda cool. Went to the pyramid net and its pretty breezy up there. Lots of people were camping out in tents. And then went to get a drink after before he dropped me at home. Okay, so I like bikes. Hahahaha. I know those who have ridden on one and LIKE the feel will agree with me. Ciao. See ya later.

Episode 12: Arranging a hit

The Aitu Force sticks together another episode. Raro is down miserably to 1 player. The twists thrown at these newbies this season were good TV.

1) Division by ethnicity
2) Mutiny option
3) Final tribal council of 3 finalists
4) Jury of 9 players

I'm assuming that the right of passage will still remain at the final 3. ROP = where they remember all other contestants.

This season's tribes:
Rarotonga
Aitutaki
Puka Puka
Manihiki
Aitutonga

Jeff Probst said that there were 3 romances. Were they Candice <-> Adam, Candice <-> Billy and Nate <-> Parvati? Cause Nate <-> Parvati wasn't that obvious. Maybe Becky <-> Yul? Hahah.

The end is Near

5 remain, with 3 tribal councils left. And the title of Sole Survivor and prize of $1 Million. They face a jury of nine. However, I hope they don't screw it up with its a tie and you will share your money thing. Blah. The titles "1 Survivor" and "Sole Survivor" do not apply then. Anyway, recap.

Original Tribes
Rarotonga - 1 remaining
Aitutaki - 1 remaining
Puka Puka - 2 remaining
Manihiki - 1 remaining

Way to go PUKA!

Episode recaps after I've watched episode 13. But you know who's gone though, from the picture. Anyway, the end nears. Finale and reunion on Monday local time, Sunday US time. Sheesh, Nicole can watch that Live if she wishes to watch it. Lucky Nicole.

All reality shows have to come to an end (seasons that is). TAR10 ended. Survivor is ending. Project Runway is ending. Without an ending we wouldn't know the satisfaction of seeing a winner. Heh.

Coming in Februray - Survivor: Fiji. So we get to see the promo video for next season. Cool. And cast release will be in January. Ah well, at least we have Christmas here. Merry Christmas everyone!

I forgot to add I need to get Jon a present too. Heh. So that makes 21 already! More updates later in the day (yes, it has returned to the days of where-we-have-nothing-else-to-do-but-blog).

Santa's Elves

The lecturers called them Santa's Elves for they stuck up Christmas stockings and Christmas gift bags on their doors and dropped little goodies in them. Hahaha. Thank you Ms Low and Ms Peter for your gifts and we appreciate them a lot. And Ms Kwa and Ms Nga, your thanks as well. We're glad you liked the Project Blitz. And also, thank you to Shawn, Janice, Phyllis, Devon, Sitze, Carol, Kamesh, Regina and Xin Le, my co-partners in crime! I wouldn't have done this without you guys. Haha. Thanks man.

On blog business, tagboard is back and all new thanks to Zhili who directed me to some tagboard service and now its here. School's out. We're drained but happy holidays are here. Soon 05 shall bid Nicole and Shaun goodbye as they head out on their holidays to US and Hong Kong respectively. Bye Hard Gay. Haha. Today was hillarious. Coolio. Holidays are here and so am I, back on the net.

'Tis the season to be thankful and generous. I like Christmas carols and just a few days ago had a thing for those slow ones. I dunno why. This year seems so un-Christmassy! Blah. Its probably cause of the ultra-long term that made us all weary and break school just one week before Christmas day. Mehh, stop complaining. At least you've a holiday eh? Anyway, I'm thankful for the friends I've come across. Cafe, so gonna be happy meeting y'all. 05, you know I love the class. And the others who I've not mentioned, you guys should know who you are. GMSS people, not to forget them. Haha, well, I don't think I've even come close to covering all.

In KL, maybe I can go for a movie. And I shall need to think up lists. As cousin L loves to do, listing, maybe so shall I.

Carol, Kamesh, Regina, Xin Le, Esther, Shwee, Yen Hao, Miriam, Yessie, Shawn, Phyllis, Wai Wai, Jenn, Nikki, Kenny, Esther Ng, Joyce, Grace, Darren, Esther Low. How many's zat? 20. Nice number eh? Christmas shopping time. Oh goodness me, I really am high now aren't I?

Irritated

I am irritated. So, forgive me for another one of those complaining about complaining posts. I need to get everything out of my system. Some people complain too much. Its as though they do it as a hobby. First, they complain that there's nothing interesting here to do. Then when a proposal wins to build an intergrated resort, they complain again because the attractions are stupid (its Universal Studios) and the architecture lousy.

Shut up! I mean, seriously... Why the heck complain so much? I, myself do really hard to avoid complaining about things. But what about others? Complainitive. Negative. Bah. Stop that cycle of negativity and channel your energy to something more productive. Speaking of which, maybe I should do that myself. Good riddance!

One last thing. Is it so hard to figure out why some things are done the way they are? Like why escalators are arranged the way they are. The escalators at Dhoby Ghaut North South Line station are a choke point, yes. The station is small, built when the NEL wasn't even conceived yet. Anyway, I digress.... The case in point, two women were complaning about the choke point. So? Do something yourselves! I know its a choke point so I wen't BEHIND the escalators to avoid the "criss-cross" and bottle neck area. The reason you have a brain is not for herding mentality. The reason the escalators are arranged the way they are is so that the transfer passengers from NEL side can get down to the NSL platform easier without creating a choke point on the concourse. Either way its arranged, there will be a choke point. Get over it. I shall now do something more productive than complain about complaining. Sheesh.
